Week 9-10 Topics:The blackboard and oral correction techniques by Halil AYBAR - Aslıhan ANAPAL-Büşra GÜNGÖR

The board is the crucial central teaching tool in the classroom. The more organised we use it, the better learning can happen. Our teacher uses the board for repeating through it. He writes some vocabulary to read from the whiteboard. For instance he writes down a number and an arrow showing spelling, then he reads it aloud by himself and ask the students to repeat it. After that he asks every one of the students to read it by themselves then aloud. We think that a board could be used in more effective way. He just uses it for one specific aim. Throughout the practicum he simply used the board in this way. He organise his work same as book does. He never adds anything different than book offers. While the teacher was writing on the board, the kids were eating or talking to each other. This is another crucial point for blackboard work. We should give them a purpose while we are writing on the board. It might be an activity, a text, or even copying could be useful. We learnt that we should be using the board way more useful, which may affect the learning quality though its something that gets little thought. For the second week we observed the teacher’s oral correction techniques which was the same as throughout the term. He seems to either ignore the mistake or corrects it automatically. For instance, a student says [tuü] to mean ‘’two’’ and the teacher corrects her unintentionally. The other example would be; another student says [tɛks] instead of [ten], and the teacher just ignores it. Moreover, to correct his students he just says the correct version. He never expects a students’ self correction, which is very normal for a young learner class.
